In this life, there will never ever going to be enough money
to save. That’s just an undeniable fact.
You should accept this before you can develop a savings culture. Salary
increase sometimes doesn’t also guarantee developing a savings culture. A
bigger client base will not also impact a savings culture into your life.
If you can’t save with what you have today, there’s a little
probability that you won’t if you have more tomorrow. One of the definitions of
culture is a way of thinking, behaving or working that exists in a society.
Well, I will define it as a habit that is consistent because it has been done
over and over till it is been assimilated into one’s way of doing things.
Looking at our society, we will discover that we have a
spending culture as opposed to a savings culture. People tend to spend because
they believe they don’t have enough to save.
“If the thought of lack has become part of who you think you are, you will experience lack, and all you will see is lack”-Eckhart Tolle.
However, as always, technology have presented us with
wonderful and trustworthy apps which will aid us in developing such savings
culture and keeping it. I will discuss my top two savings app. There are many
out there but this remains my top two anyday. They are presented in no particular order.
1.
ALAT APP
This savings app is being powered by Wema
Bank, one of Nigeria’s numerous retail banking institutions. Alat is a total digital
bank; from set up to operations. It is an award-winning app, winning Digital
Banking Platform of the Year award last year
Pros of the app
i.
Easy to set up: it takes less than five minutes
to set up, provided you have your Bank Verification Number (BVN) with you and
some documents. You don’t have to visit a branch for anything.
ii.
Simplified savings: Here is where the
intelligence of the app comes in. it has automated savings, where the user
earns 10% interest annually, THREE times the standard bank rate
iii.
Free card delivery and total card control: It
also comes with a debit card, delivered to any part of Nigeria FREE OF CHARGE!
And you can control your cards from the app. Meaning you can deactivate it,
lock it and do whatsoever you want from the app. No need of walking to the
bank.
iv.
Earning with the app: you can make money
referring your friends to download the app. Here’s my referral code: PIL2NC
I have used this app to make
savings. It comes highly recommended.
2.
PIGGYBANK.NG
This is another wonderful platform that
helps with developing a savings culture. When one hears “piggybank”, most of us
will remember what is called “kolo” when we were kids. Whether it is a shaped
like a box or a fancy rubber pig with a thin opening for squeezing naira notes
inside, which prevents the owner from simply spending money. Fast forward to
this age, technology have built one for us. I so much love this app. It “empowers
people through saving and particularly saving from one’s debit card”.
Though is accepts all cards, Piggybank.ng
is in partnership with United Bank for Africa (UBA) and in operation, is quite like
Alat that I mentioned earlier. But the only difference is that Piggybank.ng doesn’t
give debit cards. You just simply add your own debit cards and the apps makes
debits automatically on the agreed date and saves it for you.
It is important
to note to note that you can’t save LESS than N1000 a week and N5000 a month
and it allows only FOUR withdrawals on chosen dates in one year. Any other
withdrawal comes with a penalty.

not start today and start saving. Share your thoughts in the comment section below.
